The destructive
earthquakes that occur as a fact of the world constantly keep concerns about
the safety of both new and existing structures on the agenda. Various methods
are continually being developed to ensure the earthquake safety of buildings.
One of these methods is the "weakening and damping" approach. The
method is basically based on improving the earthquake performance of the
structure by optimizing the earthquake accelerations acting on the structural
system. It also optimizes the forces and displacements in the elements. This
study discusses the "weakening and viscous damping concept" in the
context of a sample design procedure. It also demonstrated, through tables and
graphs, the improvement of the proposed method on seismic performance parameters.
