Propagation of Ornithogalum Species Grown in Western Mediterranean Region

Özet

Ornithogalum species are important bulbous plants having different uses such as vegetable, ornamental and medicinal. Ornithogalum nutans is one of these species wild collected from nature of Turkey without any artificial propagation and it has been exported for years. In this study, we examine the effects of vegetative and generative propagation methods on different species of Ornithogalum that are naturally grown in the Western Mediterranean Region of Turkey. Seeds of 7 different Ornithogalum species, of which one is endemic, were collected during the years 2006-2008. The seeds were sown soon after the collection. O. umbellatum bulbs were chipped into 2, 4 and 8 segments and O. montanum bulbs were chipped into 4 and 8 segments beside single and twin scales. All the prepared vegetative organs were planted into plastic pots filled with mixture of peat and perlite (1: 1). At the end of the research, the number of germinated seeds, germination rate (%), number of bulblets, bulblet diameter (cm), bulblet weight (g) and number of bulblets obtained from each segments and scales were counted. The results indicated that the highest rate of seed germination with 100% was recorded in O. pyrenaicum while the lowest rate was obtained with 6% in O. montanum. In terms of bulblet formations per chipping and division, the best results were obtained from 2 and 4 divisions per bulb.
