Infestation and Treatment of Ichthyobodo necator in the Trout (Onchorhynchus mykiss, Salvelinus fontinalis and Salmo truttafario) Farms of the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey Ichthyobodo spp. (Costia spp.) is a common and important flagellate parasite that infests the skin and gills of many freshwater and marine fish. Ichthyobodo necator infestations are often fatal and cause significant aquaculture losses worldwide. Recently it has been demonstrated that Ichthyobodois a multispecies complex with differing host preferences. In the present study, 1200 rainbow trout (Oncorhynhus mykiss), brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) ranging from fry (1.0 g) to juvenile (10 g) were sampled monthly from April 2005 to September 2005 in four fish farms and KTÜ Rize Fisheries Research Unit to determine monthly occurrence of Ichthyobodo spp. (Costia spp.) the causative agent of ichthyobodois. Ichthyobodo necator Infestation was treated with different concentrations of formaldehyde (% 37, Merck), Trichlorfon (Neguvon, Bayer), Dichlorvos (DDVP, İmpa), Arnitraz (Kenaz, Atabay), Cypermethrine (Blotic, Topkim-Topkapi), Potassium permanganate (Codex), CMoramin-T (Merck) and salt. Ichthyobodo necator was present in the farms from April to September. However, outbreaks of ichthyobodois occurred only late in springs. While none of the Ichthyobodo necator was found in brook trout, Ichthyobodo necator was observed from gills and skin of rainbow trout and brown trout. In the laboratory, brook trout was infected with Ichthyobodo necator Salt and formaldehyde appeared to be the most effective chemicals treat Ichthyobodo necator infestation. However, formaldehyde was highly toxic to Salmo truttafario, chloaramine-T and other chemicals are not effective chemicals for treatment of Ichthyobodo necator infestation.
