Özet

CRISPR-Cas technology has emerged as a powerful and transformative tool in ornamental plant breeding, offering unprecedented precision and efficiency in modifying plant traits. Ornamental species, highly valued for their aesthetic appeal, present unique breeding challenges due to their high heterozygosity, complex genetic backgrounds, and large genome sizes. However, CRISPR/Cas9 has helped overcome these obstacles by enabling targeted modifications of key traits such as flowering time, flower color, plant morphology, and resistance to environmental stresses. This system utilizes guide RNA (gRNA) to target specific DNA sequences, enabling the Cas9 protein to be directed precisely to those regions for gene knockouts, mutations, or insertions, which are afterwards repaired by the plant’s natural cellular mechanisms. Despite these advancements, significant challenges remain in optimizing protocols and improving the efficiency of CRISPR component delivery, as conventional methods like Agrobacterium-mediated transformation can be inefficient and time-consuming. This chapter explores in detail the involvement of CRISPR-based approaches in ornamental plant breeding, highlights key target traits and genes, and presents a comprehensive literature review. Additionally, it explores future perspectives on how CRISPR could revolutionize the ornamental horticulture industry.
