Özet
In recent years, glass-bottomed observation platforms
built along cliff edges have become prominent architectural landmarks for
tourism. Despite their aesthetic appeal, ensuring the seismic safety of these
structures poses a major engineering challenge. Their massive viewing decks,
coupled with highly flexible steel supports and low natural damping, amplify
their sensitivity to seismic ground motions. In this study, the optimization
and seismic performance evaluation of a steel observation platform using a Tuned
Mass Damper (TMD) as a passive control strategy are investigated. To design an
efficient control system, the optimal parameters of the damper (including
damping ratio, and tuning frequency) were determined considering the objective
function of minimizing the peak displacement response of the structure.
Following the development of the 3D structural model, its seismic response was
evaluated under 4 benchmark earthquake records using time-history analyses. The
performance evaluation indices in this research include the reduction of Peak
and Root Mean Square (RMS) values for both displacement and acceleration
responses. The analysis results indicate that the optimized tuned mass damper
exhibited excellent performance in mitigating seismic responses under all
investigated records. Implementing this control system not only leads to a
significant reduction in displacement and acceleration demands in the main
structure but also improves the deformation distribution in the deck. These
findings demonstrate that utilizing optimized TMD systems serves as an
efficient and practical methodology for enhancing the seismic performance of
slender steel observation platforms.
