EFFECTS OF WOOD VINEGAR ON SEEDLING QUALITY AND ROOTING PERFORMANCE OF TEA (CAMELLIA SINENSIS L.)

Özet

Wood vinegar (pyroligneous acid) has recently gained attention as a natural biostimulant with potential applications in sustainable agriculture. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of wood vinegar on seedling quality and rooting performance of tea (Camellia sinensis L.) under controlled greenhouse conditions. The experiment was conducted using a selected genotype from the National Tea Gene Pool. Seedling quality was assessed based on morphological parameters, including shoot length, stem diameter, leaf number, leaf area, chlorophyll content (SPAD), and lateral shoot formation. Wood vinegar was applied at different concentrations (1/2500, 1/2000, 1/1500, and 1/1000), along with untreated and commercial controls. Rooting experiments were carried out using single-node cuttings treated with wood vinegar solutions (1/100, 1/200, 1/500, and 1/1000) and compared with untreated and IBA-treated controls (4000 ppm). Rooting performance was evaluated in terms of callus formation, rooting percentage, root number, root length, rooting quality, and survival rate. The results demonstrated that wood vinegar significantly affected both seedling growth and rooting performance, depending on the concentration applied. Certain concentrations improved morphological parameters and enhanced root development compared to control treatments. The findings suggest that wood vinegar can be considered a promising natural alternative to synthetic growth regulators in tea propagation. Overall, this study highlights the potential of wood vinegar as a sustainable biostimulant for improving seedling quality and rooting success in tea cultivation systems.
