Modernizme karşı bir tepki olarak doğan postmodernizm, toplumda yaşanan değişimler ve 1960’li yılların politik olaylarıyla yakından ilişkilendirilir. Postmodernizm ayrıca, modernizme ait fikirlerin ve teorilerin yeniden gözden geçirilmesine, hatta bazı noktalarda tamamen reddedilmesine kadar uzanır. I. ve II. Dünya Savaşları’nın sonunda dünyada yaşanan yıkım, insanları yeni arayışlara itmiştir. Bunun sonucunda da toplumlarda hızlı bir değişiklik yaşanmıştır. Bu yüzden, Cezayir Bağımsızlık Savaşı, 1968 Fransa Olayları ve İki Büyük Dünya Savaşı değişimin ve postmodern dönemin başlangıcının merkezi olmuştur. Soğuk Savaş’ın sonu ve yeni dünya düzeni ortaya çıkmaya başlamıştır. Toplumlarda yaşanan sosyal ve politik değişikliklerin yanı sıra, postmodernizmin, felsefe, sanat, kültür, edebiyat, fotoğraf, mimari, sinema ve tiyatroya da önemli etkileri olmuştur. İşte bu yüzden postmodernizmin yukarıda bahsedilen alanlarla yakın ilişkide olduğu ve modernizmden sonra ortaya çıkan geniş bir kültürel hareketi temsil ettiği aşikârdır. Bu yüzden, bu çalışmada genel olarak postmodernizm nedir sorusuna cevap aranacak, terimin beşeri bilimlerle olan yakın ilişkisi üzerinde durulacaktır.

Postmodernism is a revolt against modernism, and it is being associated with the changes in societies, and the results of politics globally mainly after the 1960s. The postmodernism era is also used to define a period after modernism, and it goes back to the reanalysing and mainly rejecting the ideas and notions accepted by modernism. The destruction of the First and the Second World Wars led people to seek for a change, and in many countries, social change also speeded up. Thus, the Great Wars together with Algerian War of Independence and 1968 France Riots were the centres of the shift, and the birth of the postmodern era. Besides, it was the beginning of the end of the Cold War and the emergence of a new world order. Apart from the social and the political changes, postmodernism has a significant impact on some concepts such as philosophy, art, culture, literature, photography, architecture, cinema and theatre. Therefore, it is clear that postmodernism is a broad cultural movement that comes after modernism and has a close connection with above-mentioned areas. Therefore, this study is going to find an answer to the question of ‘what is postmodernism’, and it pinpoints the effects of the movement on the other human sciences.
