Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) which is directly associated with obesity,t ype 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and metabolic syndrome (MS) is the most common etiology of chronicl iver disease worldwide. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, the progressive subtype of NAFLD, representsa major public health problem due to its tendency progressing to hepatic fibrosis, cirrhosis and he-p atocellular carcinoma. Estimated prevalence of NAFLD is 25% in the world, however, in line withi ncreasing prevalence of obesity and DM it is estimated to increase. According to 2016 data of World Health Organization Turkey is the most obese country in Europe with a prevalence of 32.1%. NAFLD prevalence in Turkey is estimated to be more than 30% considering the tendency in increase in prevalence of obesity and DM. The recent large-scale screening studies conducted in Turkey revealed a prevalence of 48.3-60.1%. In this review, the recent data about NAFLD epidemiology from Turkey and world are discussed.
