Power to charge up the renewable energy transition in OECD nations: battery storage and energy-storage-related R&D technologies

Özet

The global energy sector is undergoing transition towards renewable energy technologies, driven by growing concerns about global warming and energy security. Energy storage technologies are critical to facilitate the green transition. In particular, battery storage systems play a crucial role in promoting the energy transition by ensuring a reliable and stable energy supply while overcoming the intermittent nature of renewable sources. This study assesses the impact of battery storage technologies, energy storage-related R&D and clean energy innovations on renewable energy in 15 OECD countries from 2000 to 2021. The regularised common correlated effects (r-CCE) approach and the half panel jackknife (HPJ) estimation method are used in this research. The empirical outcomes indicate that battery storage technology development, power- storage related R&D expenditures and clean energy innovations are vital for renewable energy deployment. The study shows that technological advances in storage systems are a key driver for achieving carbon neutrality by increasing demand for renewable energy. It is important for policymakers to prioritise funding for R&D in energy storage, as this provides a competitive advantage for renewables and supports their integration into the current energy market.
