Abstract
The demand for research and applications to increase the safety of pharmacological treatment has increased in recent years. In particular, this area has focused on drug delivery systems (DDSs), defined as devices or preparations that provide controlled delivery and delivery of drugs to the body. Recently, sericin has been also integrated into various biocompatible materials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Sericin known as a natural protein obtained from silkworm cocoons has been extensively and actively used in the development of nano- and micro-structures especially for DDSs. Sericin-based nanoparticles (NPs) or sericin-conjugated NPs have been designed as drug delivery tools with various stimuli-responsive systems like pH, temperature, and light stimuli. These NPs have shown unique biological properties including antibacterial, antiinflammatory, and antioxidant effects, which make them used in a variety of biomedical applications.
