Özet

Rationale: While there is research on food security for cancer patients in hospitals, data on the availability and physical accessibility of healthy, nutritious food outside hospitals is limited. We aimed to assess the nutritional content and nutritional quality of menus around an oncology hospital.

Methods: Seventeen restaurants within 1 km of the hospital were randomly selected.Google Maps was used to determine the restaurants' distances, and they were categorized as "closer than 500m" and "further than 500m".Researchers collected the menus of the restaurants, and the nutrient content was analyzed using the BEBIS program.Recommended to Restricted Food Components (RRR), Nutritional Quality Index (NQI) were used to assess the suitability of the nutrient patterns in the menus.A higher RRR indicates higher nutrient content.NQI values above 1 in energy, protein, and fibre and below 1 in saturated fat and sodium indicate a higher-quality nutrient pattern of the menus.Data were analyzed with the SPSS 22.0 statistical package program.

Results: Energy, carbohydrate, protein, and fibre content of the restaurant menus that were closer than 500m to the oncology hospital were significantly lower than those of the restaurants which were farther than 500 m (p<0.05).Menus in both groups were inadequate in energy, fibre and contained undesirably high levels of saturated fat and sodium, according to NQI.NQIProtein were above 1 in both groups.Regarding the RRR value, the difference between the two distances was significant, and the closer to the oncology hospital, the lower the nutrient values of the menus(p<0.05).

Conclusion: In order to ensure that oncology patients have easier access to nutritious food outside the hospital, improvements should be made in the food environment of hospitals. The healthcare specialist should consider the impact of the food environment in medical nutrition therapy.
