Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the entrapment of ciprofloxacin (Cipro), a broad-spectrum antibiotic, within a sodium alginate matrix and to investigate its release behavior and swelling capacity in various pH environments representing the gastrointestinal tract. The use of sodium alginate as a biopolymeric carrier in drug delivery systems is of critical importance due to its biocompatibility and its ability to provide a responsive release profile sensitive to the gastric and intestinal environments. In the scope of the study, the morphological structures of the initially synthesized wet sodium alginate beads were examined, followed by stabilization through air-drying at room temperature. The responsiveness of the carrier system to environmental pH fluctuations was tested in simulated gastric fluid (SGF, pH 3.0) and simulated intestinal fluid (SIF, pH 7.0). The experimental data revealed a significant pH-sensitivity; the swelling capacity was measured as 18.33-fold in the SGF medium, whereas this value increased to 34.33-fold in the intestinal environment. This result confirms that the alginate network structure undergoes greater relaxation and exhibits an increased swelling tendency in the basic environment (SIF).
