Özet

This study aims to examine Roma women’s experiences of family and partner violence, focusing on social and cultural norms, family dynamics and coping strategies. It was conducted using a phenomenological design to explore the multidimensionalnature and social contexts of violence experienced by Roma women. Using snowball and criterion sampling methods, a totalof 22 women of Roma ethnic origin, aged between 18 and 74, were interviewed. As a result of the thematic analysis, the find-ings were categorised into four main themes: (1) Social and cultural norms, (2) Family dynamics and communication, (3)Multidimensionality and normalisation of violence and (4) Root family support against violence and mechanisms to combatviolence. The findings clearly reveal the implicit relationship between violence experienced by Roma women and social andcultural norms, family dynamics and communication. What comes forward is a need for responses that work with communityrealities and that can rebuild trust with institutions. The findings facilitate the identification of the multidimensional nature ofviolence and women’s support and coping mechanisms against violence. They are valuable in underlining that violence is notonly physical but also psychological and economic. This study shows that Roma women live with different forms of family andpartner violence, often connected with jealousy, early marriage and unequal roles at home and shaped by intersecting inequalities related to gender, ethnicity, poverty and social exclusion.
