Mecelle is the first civil code of the Islam world. The committee that prepares the
codes relied on the respected sources of the Hanefi sect. However, there isn’t either
any explicit information on the identity of these sources supposedly used in the text
or any citations to these books in the studies done by the committee members. Mesut
Efendi who was the Mufti of Kayseri province investigates the reference sources in
the Mecelle in his book titled as Mir’ât-ı Mecelle. Regarding one hundred and fifty
sources listed in Mir’ât-ı Mecelle, this article aims to describe how extensively these
sources used in the Mecelle and also identify the authors of these references.
