Urban Parking Preferences and Perceived Parking Service Adequacy: A Survey-Based Study

Özet

Urban parking affects road-space use, accessibility, and the performance of daily travel, yet parking policies also depend on how users choose and evaluate available facilities. This study examined reported parking behavior, preferences, and perceptions of parking services in Trabzon, Türkiye. An exploratory, cross-sectional questionnaire containing 35 questions was evaluated for 229 participants through descriptive frequencies and percentages. Vehicle ownership was reported by 77.3% of respondents. Shared apartment or residential-complex parking was the most common usual location (45.9%), while 31.4% usually parked on the roadside and 67.7% reported using roadside parking at least in some circumstances. The period from 13:00 to 17:00 was identified most frequently as the time of greatest parking need. Among the surveyed participants, 63.8% perceived available parking facilities as insufficient, 73.0% considered parking prices uneconomical, and 86.9% believed that roadside-parked vehicles affected traffic. Interest in information-based management was substantial: 75.2% indicated that real-time occupancy information would influence parking choice. Facility access, security, entrance geometry, manoeuvrability, lighting, visibility, and moisture conditions also shaped reported preferences. The findings support an integrated parking-management approach combining short-stay on-street controls, improved use of off-street facilities, clearer pedestrian and public-transport connections, and reliable occupancy information. The results describe the surveyed sample and should not be interpreted as an objective measurement of citywide parking supply, occupancy, or traffic effects.
