Ekonomik ihtiyaçlara karşın çevrebilimci olarak öğrencilerin ekolojik nedenlerden ötürü HES’in olmaması gerektiğini ileri sürmeleri, onların farklı perspektiflerden olayları değerlendirebilme yeteneği olduğunu gösterebilir.

Perceptions of Students about Some Local Socio-Scientific Issues

Introduction

While some of the scientific and technological innovations are quickly accepted by society, others lead to dilemmas and debates in society. These topics, called Socio-Scientific Issues (SSI), have both scientific and social dimensions and include open-ended, controversial issues that affect life. In addition to the teaching of SSI in science education, it is aimed to raise awareness of information, to help students make logical decisions, to encourage them to participate in discussions, and to help them get over the problems. In order to be perceived the SSI correctly, individuals are expected to use what they learn about these issues, make judgments and take personal decisions. A personal opinion or decision about a topic involves the evaluation of many arguments against or beside this decision. When it is thought that the information is structured within the context of the social life in which the individual is involved, it can be predicted that the thoughts about the SSI in the close environment of the individual can shape their SSI perceptions. In this context, it is important to determine perceptions about the (local) SSI in the close environment of the students.

Purpose

In this study, it was aimed to determine and compare the perceptions of a group of seventh grade students living in Rize when take different roles about HES, organic tea and green road which are from local SSI.

Method

The phenomenological research has been adopted in the study. 23 seventh grade students in a province of Rize were enrolled in this study.

Data collection tools and analysis

A questionnaire consisting of open ended questions was used as data collection tool. In the process of developing the questionnaire, firstly literature analysis was carried out and previously used questions related to SSI were examined. Based on the expert opinion, a draft questionnaire consisting of appropriate open-ended questions was prepared for the purpose of the study. The questionnaire was finalized based on the data obtained from pilot practice with ten students.

At first, brief information about HES, organic tea and green road was given at the entrance of the questionnaire. Then, they were asked separately for their decisions and reasons when they played different roles as themselves, ecologists, businessmen / women and government officials. Descriptive analysis has been applied to the explanations of the students about these subjects.

Results

It has been determined that the students who take different roles have more economical dimensions for the reasons they put forward in their decisions about HES, while the other dimension is ecological reasons. Students talked about the fact that electricity prices will decrease thanks to the HES and HES will contribute to the economy of the country, but the reasons for these economic contributions have not been mentioned in detail. For example, as a businessman / woman, they have expressed the opinion that an important part of the students should have HES by putting economical reasons into consideration for contributing to the country and family economics.

The reasons that students who assume different roles put forward in their decisions about organic tea have more ecological dimensions. Apart from this, it is determined that there are reasons for economical reasons and human benefit. The students mentioned that organic tea would protect the earth as it would not negatively affect the natural environment, but the reasons for these ecological contributions were not specified in detail. A student takes into account the cause - effect relationship when talking about the contributions of organic tea production to human benefit by saying "... must be done because chemical fertilizers produce many diseases and poisons".

13 students were already aware of the green road project and 10 were not aware. It has been determined that the reasons that the students who undertake different roles in the decisions about the green road project have more ecological dimension, besides the economic reasons and the reasons for human benefit. While students who think in the role of ecologist cannot give a reason for giving a positive opinion on the green road, the majority of those who declared negative opinions suggested ecological reasons. This shows us that students cannot think very thoroughly about a subject they are not fully informed about.

Conclusion

Justification of students’ decisions about the relevant SSI for economic reasons shows that the context that concerns the local people is more about livelihood problems. Despite economic needs, advocating that ecologist should not have HES due to ecological reasons may show that they have the ability to assess events from different perspectives. It is understood that students have a more democratic understanding when deciding on HES as the governmental authority. From this it can be concluded that the students arguments while making decisions about the SSI are affected by different contexts. However, in the questionnaire, it has been seen that while the students decide on the SSI, they are more economically and ecologically motivated but do not use scientific-technological reasons.
