Abstract
By adopting Yi-Fu Tuan’s concepts of topophilia and topophobia as an analytical framework, this paper aims to examine the gradual transformation of the spatial relationship established between the protagonist, Zebercet, and the hotel in Yusuf Atılgan’s novel Anayurt Oteli (1973).According to Tuan, while topophilia describes the emotional bond based on love, belonging, and trust that an individual establishes with a space, topophobia expresses the reversal of this bond, namely the feelings of fear, alienation, and uneasiness felt toward a space. The study posits that these two concepts are not merely a binary opposition but can exist simultaneously and in a fluid manner within the same space and upon the same individual. The central argument of this paper is that Zebercet’s relationship with the hotel does not follow a linear transformation. The topophilic bond described by Tuan harbors its own fragilities from the very beginning. The failure of the woman who came on the delayed Ankara train (one of the novel’s defining characters) to ever return to the hotel serves as a catalyst that brings Zebercet’s fragilities to the surface. Therefore, the transformation of the hotel from a “home” to a “tomb” for Zebercet is not the sudden result of an external blow, but rather the manifestation of an inherent destruction stemming from the way the spatial bond was established. The paper will address this transformation in four stages: (1) the space of routine, constructed upon the establishment of the topophilic bond through trust and order, (2) the space of expectation, shaped around the breach opened in the relationship with the hotel by the arrival of the woman on the delayed Ankara train, (3) the space of disappointment, symbolizing the internal collapse of the topophilic bond, and (4) the space of death, finding its identity as the hotel turns into a topophobic realm, and ultimately a tomb, in Zebercet’s eyes. This framework aims to concretize the productivity of Tuan’s conceptual apparatus in literary text analysis through Anayurt Oteli, and to propose a reading model for the examination of spatial representations in the Turkish novel.
