The microbiological criters, radionuclide activity and the amounts of some persistent organic
pollutants were determined in the frozen anchovy samples, and their conformity was investigated
according to the regulations determined by the Turkish Food Codex (TFC) and the European Union
Council. The detected microbiological values were found to comply with the criteria specified in the
TFC and the European Union Council regulations. Radionuclide activity concentrations were found
to be <5, <5, 102±15 and <1 Bq kg-1 for Cs-131, Cs-137, K-40 and I-131, respectively, which are
below the maximum limit values determined in the regulation. The total of dioxins (PCDD/F), the
sum of dioxin and dioxin-like PCBs (dl-PCBs), and the sum of indicator PCBs were found to be
0.02±0.0 pg/g wet weight, 0.050±01pg/g wet weight, and 2.91±0.43 ng/g wet weight, which are
below the maximum residue levels specified in the Turkish Food Codex and the European Union
Council regulation.
